Can't find a part

I know this sounds stupid but when I was removing the center console for some repairs, I removed the radio. One of the flat nuts that go on the arms of the radio and secure it in the dash fell under the shifter somewhere. I can't find it and have tried to just go buy another one but I can't seem to find one anywhere.

I've tried hardware stores and stereo shops but nobody seems to have these things anymore as the newer stereos don't use them. Anyone know where you'd find one nowadays? Annoying that such a tiny and cheap part is holding up the progress.

I'm going to hit some stereo installation shops this weekend and see if they still have some sitting around but so far no luck at ones that I have tried.

Try a junk yard around you they always have some laying around. If you can not find one by this weekend, send me your address and I will mail you the one from my radio. It is a stock radio from my 79. You can have the flat nut but not the radio.

Figures $2.50 for the 50 cent part and $8.99 to ship it in a an envelope with a 45 cent stamp. That just isn't right.

really sucks in my opinion, but that's free enterprise. no requirement to buy a product from anyone if you don't want to. I refuse to buy a GE product anymore after they wanted to charge me almost $30 for the little piece of plastic that held the batteries in my kid's Walkman type player years ago. figured it was a 5 cent piece of plastic that someone could put in a regular. envelope and mail. wrote a letter to the company brass and of course never heard a word from them. had every major appliance in my house from them at the time, not any more, lol. as the raven said, nevermore!! the kid held the batteries in the unit with some scotch tape until he gave it away, lol.

I hear you. To be honest when i saw the link I figured to overpay for it. I probably would have just said oh well if they atleast charged $8 for the nut and a couple of bucks for the shipping but I guess I am just a stubborn old coot. I'm not going to deal with those types of business deals unless I have no choice.

What it does do for me is it makes a mental note in the back of my head. This is a little worthless part but I will remember it when it comes time to order some more expensive parts and they will go to the bottom of the list in the last resort column for any future purchases.

That same nut is used on many toggle switches available at discount auto parts and hardware stores.

I just want to throw out a different perspective on the shipping and handling costs. Sure it's an inexpensive part and it only costs a few cents to put it in the envelope to mail it. BUT, the business owner must take the time to order it, use valuable storage space, track it in inventory, provide a means (website or a customer service rep) to take your order etc. All these overhead costs occur even for the small parts. The profit margin on those parts is very small and let's face it, if the buisness doesn't make money it will fail and you won't be able to get the part you need. If one business sells the part for $10 with free shipping and another sells it for $2 you are probably going to go to the place with the $2 price before you even know the shipping costs. Yeah, it seems excessive but being able to get the part you need .... Priceless.

My76ray, this isn't about making money. I understand overhead. No,a part like this isn't going to help out a business out. It isn't stocked to make profit on although at $2.50 there is profit. It is stocked so you will buy the bigger ticket items from them. If you start looking at your local auto parts for the little things you will soon realize they sell the same parts at lower prices.

I have no issue if you say you need to sell it for $10 as a stand alone item. I do have a problem with deceptive business practices of hiding the real cost in shipping fees for unsuspecting buyers.

Doing business with companies that don't practice this is priceless. Having me not look at your business when I am ready to make my big purchases....stupid.

I will try again. We compared it at one hardware store but out wasn't the same size. We even looked at pipe fittings and the nuts for lamps.

If you still have a hard time finding one, shoot me a PM with your shipping info. I have a bag of those from years of stereo swapping and upgrading. Consider it a pay it forward gesture, That's what this forum is all about, right?

Thinking a bit further ahead, this may not be the last time you drop a nut, etc... Have you tried a magnet on a flex shaft? I've seen them in tool stores, allows you to fish blindly for parts which a magnet will pick up. Maybe you could fish your old ones out? Could be useful in the future?

I drive up Loop 12 every day to Irving. If you're willing to meet, I can give you a couple from a junk radio.

I think they have that type "Pal nut" at Lowe's in the hardware section. They would be in the section where all the speciality items are kept in drawers. Might be the same .................

I was talking about parts that you can't get at the local parts store. But I hear ya. The ones that get me are the ones that charge shipping based on price. You can get hit with huge shipping costs for something that will fit in one of those padded envelopes. I still don't have a huge problem paying a premium for shipping on small parts that I can't get locally. Sometimes I don't need anything else at the time.
