I had Safelight Auto Glass come to the house yesterday to replace my front windshield. I was very nervous thinking about what could be under a 34 year old windshield. I was pleasantly surprised to find zero rust behind the windshield. I think the installer was surprised as well as he has been installing glass for over 30 years and always finds some rust in the C3's he's worked on. He did a great job and everything fit perfectly. I am counting myself lucky!
I had the standard replacement galas installed. That's what my insurance covered. If it ever become important, I can get the correct date code glass put in.
I've been contemplating replacing the original glass on my `73 that's been in California and Arizona its entire life - -the glass is pitted, but not cracked.
The resulting glare at night and in the afternoon sun caused by being "sand-blasted" over the years is a PIA - but I've held off out of a concern for originality - - pretty sure rust isn't an issue here.
To the OP - -do you notice a marked difference with the quality and fit of modern day produced glass?
Mine was the same way, pitted and scratched but not cracked. My insurance still covered it. The fit was the same as the original. Can't believe the difference.
Outstanding! Glad to see they didn't fleece you since it's a C3!!!! I just had my w/s replaced last month in my DD and paid $210.00. Good to know for future reference. Wonder if they install door glass on C3's ?
