Default Choke cable stiffness

Hi

Is there ya way to lubricate the choke cable?

The one on my 69 is as stiff as can be!

Are they always really stiff?

There is no choke cable. Do you mean the throttle cable?

Hey Mike

I did mean the choke cable; located near the base of the steering column!

Very stiff when opening and closing the choke: Maybe i'm using the wrong term. But i'm talking about operating the linkage on the opposite side of the carb to the throttle.

thanks

That's an aftermarket install on probably a Holley. Try some WD-40 or similar spray lubricant.

Check the routing of the cable to make sure it's not got any sharp bends or kinks too

Well that explains that

Just outta interest how was the choke operated on the original carbs?

Did they have one? Thinking that the electric ones weren't available back then or were they?

Do I actually need a choke anyway; could I just wire it constantly open? would probably forget to open it after warm up anyway!

thanks

I too have a manual choke. It worked ok for a few years, but now it sticks and is a pain. Mine has too many tight bends.

You might be able to buy an electric choke depending on the carb, or do like me and just crank it awhile.

Valid question.

Electric chokes predate Corvettes by quite a bit, but GM used a mechanical heat-sensitive system for many decades. Cheap, simple, worked perfectly.

For 69, the choke is intregal with the carburetor on the passenger's side and used a heat stove (thermostatic coil) and rod to open and close. AIM shows the installation.

Later cars had the choke in the same place, but it is electric. The required electrical connnection is part of the engine wiring harness.

No C3s had hand operated chokes.

I am not a tech head.... so in simple terms. The Rochester slobber jet carbs have a choke on the passenger side of the carb....it has a spring mechanism that when it gets heated allows a weighted arm to open the choke..... it looks like this on my wifes 73 but I think they are all about the same....

LOTS of these carbs laying around in shops, garages, junk yards....someone one on the forum probably has an old carb....you could get one and redo your choke.

If your carb is an aftermarket Holley or Edelbrock...then I would get an electronic choke at Oriely's or Napa...

based on your previous posts you are running the Summit Racing carburetor 750CFM, mechanical choke. I would contact them to see if they have an electric choke kit available, possbily the Holley version will fit.

Ol' Red hasn't had a choke in ... like forever. Well, since 1971 anyway. Have to play a little footsie until it starts building a little heat, but that's really not an issue and it doesn't take very long.
