Default 68 BB Alt Brkt Questions?

Hello,
working with a 427 w/ P/S.
I have a droopy alt and my belt is tracking a little forward on the pulley.
I found out I'm missing a lwr alt bracket.
I just received one from Zips.
I see the upper alt brace changed for 1970-1974?
How come? They look identical.
Also several pics on forum show mounting upper alt brace on the water
pump stud and another on the upper bracket attached to head w/bolt?
Which is correct?
The a.i.r. system is removed so will I need to space out the upper alt brace or just flush it up to fixed nut on stud on water pump?
Thanks and sorry no pics hope I made some sense??

Thanks Iron cross but I need pics of stock set up.
I'm looking to see proper mounting of upper alt bracket.

it is stcck, upper bracket goes to the intake easily visible in the first picture...the valve covers are not as I took them off another engine...and the lower bracket is cast iron which attached to the cylinder head....however this vette does not have PS or PB and does have a single Holley carb....and possibly could be different because of the aluminum intake;;;I presumed that they were all the same

Ironcross,
mine is different as I have P/S.
My alt adjusts from the lower bracket at the 7:00 position.
The upper alt brace located at the 2:00 position has been displayed on this forum in two different locations.
I'm trying to determine which is correct
A pic would be great.

There were a lot of different accessory drive configurations for the '68 depending on the options that were on it like big block, small block, PS, AC, etc. It can get very confusing. Best thing is to get ahold of an AIM for the details. Even then, it can be a bit hard to decipher.

Somewhere along the line the PO of my car replaced the alternator but didn't keep the pulley with the offset. He must have tried to make it work with the pulley he got with the alternator because he had a similar problem to yours. He tried to make it work by changing the belt paths. It was a mess. Took me a bit to get an idea of how the original layout should look. Fortunately, most of that stuff is available through Paragon. Here's some pics of my setup which is correct for PS without AC:

BTW: On these cars the power steering pump is driven by the belt that wraps around the crank pulley and water pump. The alternator is driven by a 2nd groove on the PS pump pulley. There's a separate belt that drives the water pump from the crank and nothing else. That one's a bear to install because there's no idler or tension adjustment. Then there's a separate belt from the water pump to the smog pump which is MIA on my car.

LemansBlue68,
Thanks for the pics
That is exactly what I needed.
PO moved the upper alt brace down to the water pump stud.
It dropped the alt down about 10 degrees from true horizontal.
Come to find out the alt belt was 29" so rather than get the right belt
they reconfig. the brace.
Also my lower alt support brkt was gone.
I guess they figured it would make checking the P/S fluid easier.
I installed the lower bracket and moved the upper brace to where yours
is mounted and it is correct now.
I purchased a NAPA #7300 belt at 30" and all good.
I also have factory A/C but this didn't come into play when figuring
belts.
Always a welcome suprise when PO mickey moused it

The AIM shows diagrams of all the factory installations, lists the original part numbers, has installation notes, torques, etc. No guess work involved.

Mike,
Thanks, AIM ordered to avoid repeat of same.
Just learn as you go with a 44 year old car
Didn't realize it was missing till I looked closer at alt and saw it
doin the forward lean.
Just got the car last Aug. so I figured get her sorted for driving
and worry about little details laters. I want to drive her so I going for reliabilty over restored because everyone I talk to who did a frame up
is paranoid to drive their car.
