Default Hurst shifter problem

1970 c3 with a hurst shifter installed. The shifter is loose on the tranny. Can the shifter bolts that mount the shifter to the tranny be tightened without removing the tranny? I have the console out and the lower boot off and can see that the whole shifter moves at the tranny bolt locations. I'm afraid to start unbolting things and having them fall apart and not know how to put it back together especially if the tranny has to come out anyway. Any instructions? Thanks

Yes. You have to attack it from under the car. A plate bolts to the tail piece, the shifter body bolts to the plate. Hopefully things just loosened up.

A Hurst shifter will NOT fall into pieces if it is unbolted from the trans mount...removing 2 bolts is all it takes, from underneath. Tighten loose mount bolts. Done deal.

No idea how anyone could do it from under the car without removing the exhaust pipes, at least with 3" pipes!! I did it from the top and was not fun at all!!! But now it shifts GREAT!!!!

That might explain why it was loose in the first place.

Those tight spaces can only be overcome with sheer determination sometimes.

I gave up at least 4 times but went back at it a half hour after I gave up till I got it! Can't wait to drive it again today.
