The front clip we just bought has those dastardly "rivet bumps" I did a search, which led me to a thread where I found a half dozen ideas on fixing them. But the advice given by Willcox made a lot of sence to me. So today, I removed the header, and drilled out the rivets, (WITHOUT going through the top side), and without removing the bonding strip.
I took the grinder to the rivets first, and the header just popped off. Then I used a large diameter bit, went down just enough to get into the bonding strip. Then I was able to dig out the rivet head with a chisel.
I won`t say it was easy, but it was not near as bad as I thought. I will say, it`s a lot better to do this with the clip upside down on the garage floor than if it was on the car!
Yeah, I saw them called a "badge of honor" in one thread, that`s how you can tell it`s original. It was also mentioned that they are more noticeable on darker colors. We plan to put it back to it`s original Steel Cities Gray, and I`m not sure how dark that is, so I figured I`d take care of it now while it`s easy to get at!
My 72 still has them
I don't really notice them until some weiner at a car show asks
What are the bumps?
Tell them it's just like the ripples in the NASCAR roofs, or even simpler, like dimples on a golfball, allows the car to go faster while remaining stable
Mooser
Thats excatly how I removed mine, from the bottom, when the body was on a dolly. Then I used 2 part Lord Fusor adhesive to reattach it. Forget that badge of honor, they look terrible.
Nice job... and Thank you! IMHO it is the only way to do this repair.
When you go back together make sure to put some wood strips down on top of the rivet dimples and clamp there. When you fill the holes with the glue the dimples will usually stay all the way down when dry...

Some guy in a 2000 something vert pointed them out to me, told me how much work he thought my 71 needed, and then went on and on about how much better the C5s are. I said come talk to me when that thing is 41 years old.

Thank you! I was just going to ask how to take care of that part.
