A friend with a '68 vette gave me a chrome locking gas cap. With the cost of gas in the Chicago area so high, I thought it would be a good time to use it to deter any theft. It fits my '69 perfectly. My old gas cap says "vented" . Does anyone know if the locking cap would be vented? The only ID is EE54-3-Z-75 on underside of cap. The keys are stamped Briggs and Stratton. Any help would be appreciated.
caps caps have been made vented since the mid 80s as required by law if the cap is not older than say 83 it should be vented weather the vent works or not is a whole nother story allot of autozone, oreilly, kragen, napa ect places will test the cap for free on the idea if it is not vented you will purchase your new from them congrats on the find
i had my gas stolen out of the 79 last year. i was soooo pissed it was the last time i took it out and i had a locking cap. they punched the lock with a screw driver stole the gas an i knew nothing till a mile an a half later. rush hour pacific coast highway Huntington Beach pushing my car up hill to a spot. so i agree with your cap even if it is always garaged you never know what happens at a watering hole
Thanks for the reply Jesse. My friend said he got the cap soon after he bought his vette new. I'll take the cap to Autozone to have it checked. Again thanks.
As I understand it all fuel caps are required to be made 'break away' for safety standards. There are probably just plastic tabs that hold on the chrome cap. A thief can just use a big pliers and pull the top off. Is that how yours is constructed?
Still, it's a good deterrant because most thieves are not very smart.
I was once told that locks are meant to keep honest people honest. A thief will always be a thief and will not be detered. Since I am not a thief and have no desire to steel, I don't know if this statement is accurate or true. But, I do know this, of all the material things I own, if someone steels $20 of gas, I can live with that.
If what you have is the dealer installed style locking cap, like the ones here, look closely at the one on the car, there is a small hole on the flat surface. The other has no hole and is the non vented cap. The locking mechanism is isolated and sealed outside of the sealing surface.
I believe the 69 and older had the vented caps and newer had non vented. IIRC
I bought a locking gas cap and "The Club" when I bought my car 12 years ago... Then realized that I never have the tops on and the keys are always under the floor mat.... So... still use the locking gas cap... and the key to that is on the keyring... What's wrong with that picture ???!!! (I just went out and moved the keys!!)
