In the middle of an LS3 in my 72 and yes it is very expensive. There have been some done very inepensivly also. I chose to go the full on route and the time and money is a lot. I also chose not to keep track of how much.

I don't know the cost but I would think having to install and set up all the electronics would be expensive unless you can do that yourself...
You can put a carb on them and run a $350 MSD coil/ignition timing controller if you don't like digital volt meters and computers (yes the intake is another $300 item.)
Wait extremely patiently for a fleabay or Craigslist used ls motor in the $3-7 k mark depending on mileage ect then another $5k to install properly Problem is the engine swap can be done as a simple an fast (few month) project if you find NOTHING else wrong or that you want to change in/on your vehicle in the process all the little things that are unique to every build is where it comes bak to bite you in the **** an that is possibly another couple thousand
The numbers above are spot on in my opinion but I have never done this mod on this car but have done several v-8 swaps in several other vehicles
LS3 (3/4 long block) is $4800 at Parts Taxi (forum vendor.) If you want to go "old school" you should be able to have it running for under $8K if your an "glutton for punishment" like myself, you find a dry sump LS3 project and re-cam it and yes expenses can get out of hand
I did just score some truck coil packs/brackets at the wrecking yard for a good deal (the good 585 coils with the heat sinks)
