Sorry to hear your 74 was stolen. Hope the jerks that are responsible were caught, or karma gets them back 10-fold!!! As for the column, do you have an AIM? Every piece in the assembly is exploded in there

Well, as long as we're on the subject, I like the write up, but you forgot one teeny-tiny, but oh-so-critical part. Just how the hell do you compress that spring enough to get the assembly (your figure J-1) back in place??? And this is for an '81 with T/T column.
And while we're at it, what is the part and purpose shown in figure F-2?

You use a allen set screw (in place of the star screw) to keep the upper shaft from telescoping. Then install the compressor tool to compress the spring so that you can install the c-clip. Then remember to remove the set screw and replace it with the star screw. Otherwise you could have a permanently locked telescoping feature.

<scratches head>
Maybe I'll have to actually see the tool to know what you're talking about but I'm having a really hard time picturing that. Where would I use an allen screw? On the tool itself?
Oh, also, seriously? The way that thing is put together that spring presses directly on that plastic ring under the column lock plate??? That just seems insane to have that much spring pressure on a piece of 30+ year old plastic. Or am I missing something?

If you look at page 5 you'll see the tool and the screw we made for doing this. An allen screw would probably be a better choice as Jim mentioned. We just fab'd up a screw years ago. The tool is in picture H-1 below.

Yeah, I saw the tool. But how do you attach it to a telescoping column?
Also, am I right that the spring seats directly on that piece of plastic under the column lock plate? That just seems like an insane amount of spring pressure for cheesy plastic.
