Default Insulate and/or wrap - 1980 hood issues

I don't believe the 1980 Vet came standard with under hood insulation?
I may either have to insulate with aftermarket material glued to underside of hood or wrap the extractors, or both, any experiences?
(reason is continual bubbling of hood paint above extractors?)

That car did come with the hood mat. However it was less about heat and more about sound and to be a fire barrier in case the engine caught on fire. By extractors I assume you are talking about exhaust manifolds? If they are getting that hot then you may have other issues. First off are they stock manifolds or an after market header? When was the last time your timing was looked at and the mixture? These are things that can affect the temperature of your exhaust manifolds. If you're seeing bubbling caused by heat you have bigger problems and those need to be addressed. A hood mat isn't a solution, but it was a stock item so you can replace it easily from one of the many Corvette parts vendors.

I'm not sure it did. The AIM does not show the installation and shows blackout for the entire underside of the hood. My 80 L-82 does not have a mat.

I agree, hood insulation is for sound deadening purposes, not heat proctection.

I am not sure why I forgot the 'not' in my post. Brain fart maybe. This whole time I thought I wrote that it did not come with one. Either way, that's what I intended.

Default Hood heat

The exhaust manifold is custom made after market.
I have had two motors and numerous tune ups but the bubbling of the hood continues after a second respray. I have posted this issue before believing that the hood paint was the issue, moisture caught underneathe of finished coats, but now I am convinced it is heat. Some of the heat blanket suppliers talk about avoiding heat related paint failures so I thought bubbling might be more common. As for the tune up I believe the motor is currently running too lean but would this make that much difference? General running temp is around 195.

Default Hood and heat 1980

The exhaust manifold on my Vet is a convoluted pipe structure. I am considering the ram horn set up which I think might have been standard from the factory and looks like an economical use of pipe, reducing structure and directing heat down effectively. I have been told plugs are hard to service with ram horns, does anyone have them?

Plugs are probably easier to reach with stock manifolds than with tube headers. The rams horn design was stock on all C3s.

Many years of Corvettes, C3 or otherwise, had no underhood blankets. None of them suffered heat damage on the hood.

Here's what I have seen twice... At a car show, hood up the polished / chrome air cleaner top will concentrate the sunlight on a small area and bubble the paint... So now there are a lot of rags, towels ect covering them on sunny days ...

Hi everyone. My 80 vette was modified, electric fan, headers, no hood insulation and no way for the heat to excape when idioling. Result is a burnt hood so bad that the composite bubbled. After sanding i was left with a bunch of pot holes! What would be the best material to repair this composit hood ?

The bubbling is most likely from contamination of the resin, not heat.
