Original battery caps had a vent hose for each 3 cell cap.

Now that was the dumm question.
Just kidding.

Leave them to keep holes pluged.
And when the C3's are worth BIG money. You can get a retro battery to reinstall.

They are a little annoying and unsightly...but, I just tucked ours around in front of the battery and leftem hangin.
Another thing that is NOT necessary is the thick layer of foam sealing off the battery storage lid.....it puts it in a bind and with the sealed batteries and no more danger of fumes, it sure makes the lid fit better to leave the foam out.........

they were to provide for an "exit" for the acid vapors that charging batteries (in those olden days, lol) used to give off. since the battery was in the passenger compartment, it was a safety measure of sorts and provided ventilation for the lead acid batteries of the day.

Very nice pic. Was that battery more than an off the shelf Exide or Die Hard for example? I like all original OEM when possible too but don't want to pay my arm or leg when something works and looks just the same.
