Wednesday I spent the entire day removing the bolts and straps to drop my fuel tank on my 74. I had to drill out all the bolts ect. I finally dropped the tank and lowered the tank via my floor jack. Removed the return line and called it quits for the night.
I woke up the next morning to complete my project, as soon as I walked in my garage I heard water running. But much to my surprise the main fuel line at the bottom of the tank cracked (dry rotted) and there was 8gallons of gas pouring all over my garage and running down the drive way... Yikes!
Lesson To Be Learned: drain the tank before removing it.
I'm glad no harm was done.
STEP 1 Drain the gastank!!!!
Use a siphon tube. Yes I got a mouthful of gas but that's a separate thread on how to siphon gas out of tank.
Oh, and even an "empty" gastank requires tremendous caution because residual fumes can be very explosive. I left my empty tank outside of the garage and dumped some sand in it for good measure.
a broken supply gas line to the fuel pump will have the same siphon action effect
Many people do not know that rubber intake hose to the fuel pump is gravity fed from the tank. Many years ago I decided to replace that S-hose. Before I knew it and grabbed a vise-grip to close things off I had about four gallons of fuel on my asphalt driveway. Repairs to the driveway were $800.00. Live and learn.

Wow! Glad you are OK and nothing worse came of that.
