Went to check the oil in my 73 today , just for something to do and the dipstick tube itself is broken off approx. 1/8" away from the (L82) block ....
Anyone see this before and how hard is it to replace it?
Doesn't appear there was any intermediate support anywhere which probably contributed to this but man ... What a P.I.T.A.
I'd post a pic but it's in a real Bit@# of a spot .

Thanks guys , yea it's the oil dipstick and not the tranny one .
I've read a few horror stories on getting the old one out and wanted your expertise , it broke off right at the collar that seats the tube to the block so it's gonna be a bit of a pain but I'm thinking the needle nose route may be the way to go.
Thanks for the replies.
i laughed when i read this...about a month ago i went to check my oil & the sleave that the dipstick slides into came out of the engine
now i have to hold the sleave while i slide the dipstick in & out
the only thing i can figure is the end of the sleave that goes into the engine is purposely enlarged & inserted into the engine...with time it decided to not hold as well (shrug)
I used an easy out on my '78 l48. Not the drill piece, but the other piece.. and slowly and CAREFULLY twisted it to the left and it grabbed and pulled right out without making shavings or any issues.
I have used an Easy Out on two blocks to get broken dipstick tubes out of them. Take your time so you don't allow it to slip and pull a chip which might fall into the pan.
Unk
