Work basically took over my life since last september so progress has been slow and it small chunks. However, the last few weekends i feel like im making good progress again. It been lots of small projects, but they are starting to show!
First some overall shots from today:
I finished closing the rear exhaust openings in anticipating of the OBX sidepipes and STS baffles.
Rear deck with window out ready to go...
Cleaned up inside the nose...
...the underside of the hood (going to sand this down again and add a few more coats)...
...inside of the driver's side door...
...and door jams...
I can elaborate on any of these projects if anyone is interested, but for now im looking forward to a beer and relaxing on the couch.
The last 2 months have been spent finding and fixing each little imperfection on the body. A little fiberglass here, a little filler there. Finally it was ready for high build primer. I chose slick sand because it is regarded as one of the best products and I had used it once before with success. I used a finishline HVLP paint gun with a 2.2mm tip and reduced the slick sand by 10% with acetone (some recommend using a fast reduced instead). My garage got a thorough cleaning last weekend, then again on thursday evening. Friday night all the drop clothes went up and saturday I painted the doors, t-tops, and hood. I thought I had pictures of those. Ill add some tonight. Enjoy!

Looks like my garage a year ago. I found sunlight to be the best illumination of all and put a big mirror outside to reflect onto the lower portion. You can't get enough light.
Because I see the doors on sawhorses, my advice is that if you are painting a metallic, keep the doors vertical when you paint the color. I built a frame to hang them in the correct orientation for that step.
Been sanding constantly since the last update. Sanded down the entire first coat of slick sand and obviously had some low spots. This evening I began remasking the body which will be sprayed again tomorrow. For now here are a couple of cool shots. Ill take some more of the entire car before it gets painted again.
My fav angle...
Hood had some low spots along the base...(notice the center line of the hood)
Even the headlights are getting a couple of coats. These will be installed prior to the next round of sanding to ensure proper alignment.
Is there any good reason why this body and paint thread is NOT in the body/paint section?
I was doing a project last winter and posted in the paint and body thread, I got very little response or help except for Dub and he is a great guy. When I posted in the general forum I got all the help and encouragement I needs to get the job done. I just bought a 73 and my project is also posted in the general thread. It's a great place to be!
BTW love the work going on here bro!'
More progress. I resprayed the entire car this morning, with that drying I sanded the hood and doors which were resprayed last night. After a few hours in the sun I started the back half of the body with 180 grit. Ill let it bake in the sun a few more days then ill hit it with 320.
Finally finished with the high build. It took 2 coats on everything to get it razor straight. During the last few days I laid down the primer. Ill wet sand this with 400 then 600 before dropping the car off at the painters.
Im sure you can guess what color i finally picked.
Wow...it's been a long time since I've looked in here. I gotta commend you for your persistence. It will really pay off when the paint gets laid down. I know this also...any doubts you may have about finishing the project will disappear quickly as soon as it comes home from the painter.
Nice work, Doubletake. Keep posting till you're done, eh?
Off to the paint shop! I busted my *** all week to finish the wet sanding of everything to 600 grit wet. A few guys came by last night to put the hood and doors back on the car then this morning the flat bed showed up.
Will be done by saturday (maybe as soon as thursday)!!
Im going out of my mind waiting to see it.
