Just had a D&B mini starter installed and I am very pleased. Starter definetly spins faster and the best part is that the car starts right up hot. No more praying at gas stations!! Best $57 bucks I've spent in a long time!

I have one for my 78 and have a question.
Did you use the shimms and how did you check for how many to use?
Sorry Mike - a question I can't answer. I ordered the starter and had it shipped to the shop that works on my car. I do know that there are two different bolt configurations and what I needed were the staggered bolts. I have a SB and according to my research, it is not hard and fast (with respect to engine) as to what is needed. Did get some very good info when I searched the archives. Hope this helps.

Bringing back an old thread but have a question. Just installed one of these starters and Im not sure how to connect the ground cable coming from the frame. Originally it was mounted to the brace which was mounted to the starter and block.
Were you guys able to modify the brace or got a different one if any at all? Also, where does the ground cable connect to now..... the block or one of the front starter terminals?

When I put mine in I eliminated the brace (no problems in 2 years) and bolted the ground right to the block.
Love the starter.

I put one in last winter.
Absolutely the best move I made.
I have a 68 BB.
No shims needed.
I have new battery cables, good grounds,
new battery w/ extra cranking amps.
I did it all and still when it was hot was slow to turn over.
Put the mini in and it turns that 10.25:1 compresion over
like it was a 6 cylinder accord engine
Started right up last summer after shutting it off on 90 plus degree day after idling along at snail speed for several hours in a parade.
No starter brace needed and no heat shield or blankets needed.
Can be used with points ignition too.
Agh technology

DB is on the way. my plan is to use a 25#
$50 walmart battery to save weight and $$.
mini's use half the amps to start, so why lug around a heavy battery? normally 35-40#
total 20-25# less weight
I put one on my 74 small block years ago.
No shims BUT did notice that the clutch cover (4 speed)
started to vibrate after I put in the starter, some gentle bending of the cover
sorted that.
Best thing you can do IMO.
Reduces weight, no heat soak probs and
it sounds like a plane spinning up.

just and FYI for others. I've rebuilt my stock starter and it spins fast enough to register I think 300 rpm. No hot start problems ever, and that is with headers. Mini starters are great, just throwing out another possibility.
DB starter arrived. Bench test, solenoid draws 19.5A and works down to 6.2 volts( my 10 amp charger in cardiac arrest)
I've measured the V drop in my 72, and will compare to DB to estimate amps savings, if any.
Also will compare to 5+ year old battery that drops to 9.59v in 10 sec. Can it do 10V?
new life for 5 yr old battery! now 10.3v 10 sec crank at 52F.
was 9.59.
draws ~1/3 LESS amps.
so smaller battery is a no-brainer, unless u have hi-amp elec fans and a weak alt.
OLD starter was 24# vs 7.5 mini, so a 16# weight savings, plus will save 10# on my next walmart battery. total savings 26#
