I just put on new weatherstripping on the door and windshield pillar post. I have to really slam the door but I've read that's normal. But the problem is when I shut it the window glass hits the metal clip holding the weatherstrip and I have to push on the glass from the outside to get it in the right spot. And it's really hard to open the door from the outside too. Anybody have advice on this?
You may have to adjust the window, sounds difficult, but its easy! on the bottom of the window, where it enters the top of the door there are 2 (?) inch wide felt window adjusters. The window rubs against them as it travels up and down. On the top of the adjusters is a screw that can be loosened a little to allow the adjuster to be pushed outward or further inward to adjust window travel. In your case, loosen the screw, push the felt adjuster further inward, allowing the window to move inward as well, then tighten the screw and your done!
Let me know how it goes
Don't do anything just yet. Give your new weatherstripping a chance to relax and take a set. Adjust the door first and have it opening, closing, and sealing as it should.
Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM) and follow the directions for setting the front edge of your door glass against the new weatherstripping.
I redid my w/s and it's still not right. My windows were hitting the clips, and one even chipped the window glass a bit. I took 'em off (the clips). What I really need to do is take my time and readjust the windows on both doors. The manual I have says to loosen EVERY bolt (after taking the door panel off) and adjusting the window with the door closed and down 1 inch. When I have some free time (and not driving the car...).
Good luck guys. I did all my weather stripping last spring (2011) and had a heck of a time adjusting everything ! Many forum members helped me with advice, Willcox was great (where I ordered from), and after weeks of frustration took it to my dedicated vette mechanic. He did best he could, but even now I still have small gaps in the upper front corners.
I'm going to try lots of silicone spray wiped on the weatherstrips repeatedly in hopes they will soften up enough to allow the window to go up at least another 1/8 inch..then all should be good.
take the door panels off and take a good look at the window going up and down .see if the window is going back and forth .my window was loose on the mounting part that goes up and down.lube all moving parts .it took me a while to get it right ,but the improvment in noise reduction was great .one tip that i would offer is a piece of paper between the glass and w/s ,close the door and pull out the paper .it should have the same feel of drag all around the glass.if not that is where your air leak is.
The window gaps on my convertible are garbage. I'm gonna dig into it this weekend. Any advice on the convertible top to windo gap? Or better yet, which gap should I start with to assure proper alignment. Window to A pillar? Thats what I'm thinking. Also someone mentioned a manual. Any manual in particular for this convertible predicament?
the aim manual for your year car should help.i would look at what the worst gaps were and try to adj them .the aim will show you the bolts that you can loosen to adj the window.
I replaced all my weatherstriping and fought the door glass till I was blue in the face. A good friend that works at a Vette shop here in Crestview showed me the difference in types of weatherstriping. I pulled the pillar pieces off and replaced them with the ones he had and the door glass sealed the way it was suppose to. Someone correct me if I use the wrong name, but the difference between hard rubber and latex is amazing as far as weatherstiping is concerned,Terry
If Terry is on to something here guys, could we get an agreement if the "latex" is the better way to go....and if so what vendor carries it/ do we ask for it specifically? I plan on doing A pillars in the winter, but would love to learn more about this now.
Yep, the hard weatherstripping is not close to the supple nature of the originals and you probably won't get it to seal up right with hard rubber, or have to live with slamming doors for a long time. It's worth it to get the softest stuff that's out there, but it's hard to know what is good and what is junk because they all seem to be advertized as being OEM quality, even the junk.
I bought a kit that was advertized as "OEM Quality" but it wasn't even close. Having been through it before, I sent it back. I found NOS front pillar and rear side pieces (paid a premium for them) and the door gasket is as supple as the original other than the molded-in end pieces are harder than OEM, but I'm hoping I can live with it.
So, do your shopping around and don't settle for the 'hard' or substandard gaskets. Good luck!
The only weatherstrips we sell and install is Corvette Rubber brand and we do so without any issues. If the door glass is hitting the clip on the pillar weatherstrip there could be several things going wrong.
The pillar weatherstrip could be adjusted wrong, the door glass could have worn parts, it could also be an issue with hinge pin bushings being worn.
If you can roll the glass up about three quarts of the up and see if it is loose and wiggly. If so, then you've got issues with the regulator to. Terry hit the nail on the head with checking for something loose.
My current weatherstripping is trashed to hell so I ordered a new set the other day from Wilcox. Reading all this has me a bit scared that it is going to be a pain to install and get right but I have all the materials to make it work.
My luck dictates that it will fight me every step of the way.
Soggy.....if you wouldn't mind, please keep us updated on your experience with the Corvette Rubber weatherstripping. It's quality, texture, ease of installation and fitment. I for one would be VERY interested to see if this is exactly the answer to a lot of our problems.

It will probably be a few weeks before I attempt installing it but when I do, I will let you know how it goes.
