Default power brake booster filter question

My 1978 did not have a brake booster filter but apparently is supposed to so I bought one and am installing it. One side is straight, one side is a 90degree elbow. Which is the engine side and which is the booster side? Does it get installed vertically or horizontally - does it matter - I've read that it should be vertical? I've seen pictures with it done both ways. I believe it should be vertical with straight tube downward connected via short hose to metal tube mounted on engine and elbow on top connected to hose that goes to booster.

Odd camara angle aside (), it appears to be oriented correctly.
