Default Steering column problem, somethings loose.

My 81 has something in the steering column that is loose from what I assume is people using the steering wheel to assist them in getting out of the car. The wheel does have a little play in it if you lift up on it or when turned quickly (while parked) you can hear what seems to play in the steering column. Any ideas?

If it's a tilt telescopic , there are two screws deep in the colum that need to be tightened , I did a few and I used locktight on them and mine never came loose again.

I was having too much Free travel in my steering. The wheel could go damn near two inches left to right with out effecting the tires. I adjusted the bearing preload and added some grease to my gear box and now she is mucho te solid.

The bolt on the top of gearbox with the flat head cut into it is the preload adjustment

Should be. T/T became standard on the 80 models.
