I recently removed the dash harness and checked every wire for continuity. All were reading correctly so I decided to keep the harness and save a few bucks. However, there is a connection under the center console with a pink and green wire that does not have anything to connect to (picture 1). On the Doc's rebuild diagram, it lists this connection as the backup switch conn. (picture 2). This is an automatic 72. In the AIM, I believe I have found the connection for it but it is taped to the wiring harness (picture 3). Does this mean it wasn't connected? I also do not have any backup lights. What am I missing?
Does anyone have a picture of the neutral safety switch for an auto? I did a search and found a post by Easy Mike stating it was located under the center console but this 72 is missing one.
I believe it is the same as a '71 automatic.
I think you would find it under the shift mechanism after removing the top console plate.
From my 71 AIM the wire color codes and the one I removed are the same so it would be a start.
I can send a picture of the one I removed if it helps
It is also listed as a neutral safety/backup light switch in the catalogs.
Forgive me. The DARK green/pink wire combo I was looking at in picture 1 is for the seatbelt warning. I do have a neutral safety switch. How can I test it to see if it works properly as my backup lights do not work. I have it hooked up as shown in this picture.
Curious though, and forgive my ignorance, why is the pink wire hooked to the LITE green and the LITE green to the pink?

Hi again,
The pink brings 12 volts to the switch and the Lt green brings it to the lights.
Is your NSS new? I heard some new ones have the colors wrong.

If your 72 has AT, it would have had the neutral safety switch. Check the M40 AT option in your AIM. Off the top of my head, the pigtail from the switch plugs into the harness connector you have found.

I found the switch, just ignorance on my part. But, as stated above, why are the wires crossed over when hooked up? Is this correct and how can I test the switch to determine if its defective?
