I made the same change to the inner holes on the shifter back around 1975. At the same time I also moved the tie rod ends into the inner holes which gave me faster steering. It's only recommended for non-power steering models. Quicker steering also means stiffer steering. Really helped build up the arms in my younger days. Also kept the wife from driving the car.

SORRY GUYS AND GALS. Didn't realize I was posting on this old one. Was reading from what have you done for little or nothing and got side tracked. Comes with age.

Great tip!
Solid,
Did you make this adjustment to the white car that I bought from you? It doesn't feel any different from the red car so I guess not. If not, looks like I have another project coming up.
To the OP, thanks for planting the seed.
Regards from Down Under.

You move the shifter rods from the upper lever holes (pictured) to the lower holes on the two forward gear levers.
It requires adjustment (shortening) of the linkages.
It was actually mentioned in the '71 Owners Manual.
"If desired, the shift linkage may be adjusted to allow "short stroke" shift lever operation. See your Chevrolet dealer".

So about how much did you have to shorten the linkages?
My shifter actually touches the edge of the bezel you you make a quick shift. I have been wanting to do this for some time, thanks for the inspiration

I adjusted mine to the short throw, it didn't make a real big difference but then my shifter is wore out so maybe that has something to do with it. It is better but I was hoping for more.

HI,
I want to change to short throw shifter but am uncertain if I should take the arm ( green arrow) off by undoing the (red arrow) bolt or do I just disconnect the rod ( not much space).
Last where do I place the thin metal gage to lock the shifter gates in neutral. Many thanks in anticipation any pictures to help would be a bonus thanks.

This is an old thread and will probably get closed...
If you are just looking to keep the stock arms and switch from the upper holes (long throw) to the lower holes (short throw), you disconnect the rods only and move them down (not the pieces you have arrowed).
It's worth it.
