Default Remove Harmonic Balancer

I need to remove the harmonic balancer from a 327 in a 1968 Corvette.

Please tell me what size bolt and thread that is tapped in Crankshaft. I don't have one that screws in. The closest tap that fits is 7/16 and 20 threads per inch. I am aware there are gear pullers. I am also trying to save money. The engine is locked and I want to take off timing chain to isolate crank and cam. I took off left head and sprayed lube on each cylinder top. California car, really good shape. It has a crack in the body at each rear well. I looked to see if the frame was cracked but the frame looks to be just surface rust. Lucky me! Must have been parked in garage with kids and BB guns.

What size bolt screws in the crankshaft?

Sincerely Jim

Is the harmonic balancer bolt missing? I don't follow how having the bolt will help remove the balancer. You should use a harmonic balancer puller. Some auto parts stores or rental centers may rent one.

The balancer puller bolts to the balancer, typically using the holes where the pulley bolts to. There's a large threaded rod in the center which, when turned pulls the balancer off.

the bolt hole in the crankshaft is for installing the damper, you have to use a puller to remove it, also you will have to drop the front of the oil pan to remove the timing chain cover

I believe the crank bolt is 7/16 - 20 x 2 1/4". You can probably find one at any speed/auto parts place. You will also want the washer which goes with it.

....don't skimp here; buy (or rent) a good balancer puller and installer. A broken crank bolt (not hard to do) could end up costing a lot to correct.

Go to the Zone....Auto Zone.

They will let you borrow the tool.

You will need to leave a 40.00 deposit, but you get that back.

40 $1 bills won't do it at my local AutoZone...a credit card is required. The one they lent me was an OTC brand universal tool set. It was not abused and worked well. A steering wheel puller will also work for removing the balancer.
