Scott, I hear you on not as old but thats due to war...for the most part. I just hate thinking of another factory original being cut up for looks. If the car was already modded to death then it wouldnt matter. My next vette will be one that has been modded to death so I can fix her the way I want without the guilt of destroying a factory original.
Curious as to just what you want out of the car. Do you want to elevate its value or just make it a little nicer?
It sounds like you're not the do-it-yourself kind of guy, and if you pay a shop to repaint the car you will lose any investment you might have made, i.e., you will spend upwards of $10k getting a decent paint job and you'll be lucky if it increases the car's value by $5k. That is true with almost any restoration work that you pay others to do.
If you have the facilities, the skills, and the will to do things yourself (and this forum is a wealth of info-including my own there are probably five or six active paint threads underway right now) then the potential returns become a lot more attractive.
Didn't mean to add to the cornfusion but it seems to me that that is where the real issue is here. Paying an automotive restorer (and often finding a decent honest one in the first place) to increase your car's value is a losing deal no matter what-you may well be money ahead just driving it until you get tired of it, then passing it onto the next person to enjoy...

That's a real good question. I really like this car and I'm very happy to own it. One thing for sure I don't want to do anything that could hurt the value of the car. I'm very handy with a wrench but would not try to paint the car. As I said earlier after getting all of this advise I will not do anything until I figure out exactly what I have. I will title, register, and insure it after listening to you guys. I'll take it out on nice days and parades.
