Default Beyond Bubba

Owning a hotrod shop, I take a great amount of pride in what I do. Every custom job I do, I strive to make it look like it came that way from the factory.

Not everyone, however, shares my passion. This '79 we just bought ran and drove when we got it. I checked the major stuff. No frame or birdcage rot, tight steering, etc.

The previous owner had someone put an engine and transmission in this car for him. What can I say to describe this? Everything he did was WRONG. Not sub-par, not bubba-fied, ...just ...friggin' ...WRONG! It's gonna take a minute to un-funk the car, but it's definitely doable.

I rolled my eyes in disgust this afternoon. I did get it running pretty good though. I took four parts carburetors and built one good one out of the lot. (Holley) I had to repair the intake manifold where he stripped the bolt holes for the base plate, but she fired up and ran like a new one. Now just a moderate list of other things to correct and we can start putting some miles on her.

That's something I learned the hard way when I was a kid, screwing around with dirt-bikes: It's real easy to strip threads in aluminum! Ya gotta take it easy, man, not everything needs 100 lbs. of torque......

Longer if you do it wrong the right way.

It's not so bad when you see a real Bubba "repair", and there is some sort of explanation for it, like "I was on the side of the road at 3:00 AM, I'm planning on fixing it right as soon as I can.....". But some people are proud of their Bubba repairs. "Yup, fixed the exhaust with a wire hanger and an old tennis ball can. Came out pretty nice, huh?"

Anytime you hear a car repair start out with: "Hold my beer and I'll show you how to..."

It's not going to end well.
