How to remove ashtray cover on 78 vette
I need to remove my ashtray cover on my 78 so I can repaint it.Can I remove it by just removing the side panle on the consul.Has any one done this

I would say probably not.
The lid is attached by 2 plastic pins, that just push in to place. You may be able to remove them, and later reinstall them.
The problem will be the spring for the lid. I don't think you can remove the spring, with the console in the car.
I've taken a bunch of them apart, but never tried with one, with the console in the car. Hopefully, someone else will chime in, who has tried to do this.

I got mine back IN with just the sides off, but I didn't have the plastic pins mentioned, so I ended up using a pair of small bolts and lock nuts- The tear down wasn't my doing by the way- the PO had all that tore out and packed into a large tote when I got my car.
After you get it painted and back in there, watch the edges of the cover when you flip it open the first time- if it's not centered and squared up just right there's going to be some paint damage and you'll have to do it all over again...
