I just joined the forum today because a few weeks ago I recieved a 1980 vette which is in dire need of restoration lol. Anyways the paint on the car is the hideous white (in my opinion) and I will be laying down the 2012 c6 cyber grey on the body. Heres the tricky part... Wheels.. it needs nice rims. I had an idea which was to pick up a set of 2012 Grand Sport smoked charchoal rims. I imagine that spacers will be needed but is this even possible?
-Thanks, Trenton
They're going to stick out the side of the car. Otherwise, it ain't happening. Welcome to the site, next time do a search. This was just recently discussed.
Oh no not white!!! Grey would look good and I don't know if the GS rims would fit, I did a search and didn't find anything, maybe someone in the tec section would know. If your able to make this work I'd like to see pics! and welcome to CF.
Welcome to CF! As said above there is a search feature here, BUT it's often times not very helpful. Have a question and can't find something on a previous post just ask. Always better to ask and get the help you need. There is an amazing amount of knowledge here.
There is a stainless steel "Trim Tag" riveted to the driver's side door pillar. The trim tag identifies the build date, the interior trim, and external paint. This information is embossed (stamped) on the tag. For your 1980, this tag was installed between the second and third color coats and will likely show signs of the original paint color. "Likely" because the paint did not always adhere well to the SS and previous owners may have stripped off the paint to more easily read the embossed information. Depending on the model year, installation of the trim tag on the was done at various places on the production line - so some years originally had paint on the tag and some did not.
At the top of the trim tag on your 1980 it will say "CHEVROLET" followed by a letter and two numbers. The letter indicates month and the digits indicate the day your car was built. (approximate date - as tag was installed during production and the car might still have been on the line at day's end) The month code "A" corresponds to the first month of production for that model year - for 1980 production began in October 1979. (So a car built on 17 Oct 1979 would have a date code of "A17" - one built on 13 Feb 1980 would have a code of "E13") - (NOTE: The month production started varied over the years so the "A" month is not consistent year to year.)
Below the "CHEVROLET XXX" are "TRIM ZZZ ZZZ PAINT" where the "ZZZ" are the interior trim (color) and paint codes your car had when it left St. Louis. If you post those codes someone will tell you what colors they correspond to - there are lots of books and web sites with this information as well.
Personally I would recommend either searching pictures of C3's with new style rims on them or use a Wheel Visualizer to see what your car will look like with the Grand Sport wheels. It might be a waste of money buying the rims to find you don't like them.
I only suggest it because to be honest, I think all the C6 rims look hideous on a C3.
(No offense to any members that do have those wheels on their car.)
The 80 Vette has some HUGE wheel wells... especially in the back...larger rims would help to fill them up but I'd be careful and make sure you still do not have a ton of empty space on my C3's if I run 60 series tires in stock rims the rear wheel wells look downright empty..especially if you put in a new rear spring ...
Welcome/Google is the best (as if I have to say it)
Welcome to the gang!
I'm far from an expert (still inside the 1st year of c3 owner-dom) but in regards to the search, I have found that google will work better for an initial search ex: when you first have the question or problem (9/10 times it will bring you back to this forum with the question). Use the advanced search option on the forum for when you want to find an article you have seen before and you remember the wording of the title.
Thanks for all your help everybody. I made my desicison to go with the Boss 338. After looking into the c6 rims the more I started to dislike them haha.
