hi? what is the best tire to put on a 82 corvette not lowered to decrease the wheel/fender gap. i was told these numbers 295/50/15 and 255/60/15
what do you say?. i want to fill my wheel/fender gap by putting in bigger tire but maintain control and stability and comfort and keeping the stock rally 15" rims
Considering that the ability of a tire to perform well, is somewhat dependent on the width of the rim it's mounted on, I personally feel that the 295/50 is too wide a tire for an 8" rim. Consider that GM originally mounted 225/70s, much narrower tires, on an 8" rim. That pulled the sidewalls out a bit, which gave stability to the tread, and allowed for good handling.
A 295/50, on the other had, curls the sidewalls inward, de-stabilizing them, and I'm pretty sure that the handling will suffer accordingly. Yes, they might look "sorta' cool", but they won't work all that well...
The stock size tires are 27" tall. The 255/60-15 is 27" tall. Anything shorter you will need to lower the car accordingly which you made need to do anyway to get "the look" you may be after. The 295/50-15 needs a wider wheel as stated above. Now you get into clearence issues with either the trailing arm or fender lip.
