As said you did the right thing, cash in hand or GTFO. Either he was a grade A idiot or trying to scam you. No matter which one it would have been a headache for you. Scammer you could be out a car and money. If it was just a idiot then it take a month to really get the money and then he complain the title took to long to get to him, the car does not get as good gas mileage as he thought, it needs brake work, etc…
When I bought my 73 I sent a couple hundred by PayPal just to show I was serious. I then drove from VA to MA to pick up I had cash. No checks, PayPal, WestUnion, etc... BS. Gave him the cash, he have me a title, and I loaded the car on the trailer.
A trick I learned from someone that drove a lot was to put a small little safe in the truck but hide the money in the seat. If someone breaks in they usually grab and run so they see a safe and grab that and take off with out looking.
The only thing you forgot to mention was this guy had a nigerian accent and he was willing to pay you more than you asked for and please keep the extra funds for your troubles. If it sounds too good to be true....
he had a southern accent because he was from Georgia. the car could have been his for a good price if he had just been willing to even show me a little cash. for a small deposit i would have held the car for months for him.
Another problem I had years ago was selling a car and just signing the title and giving it to him. He put it in a shop to have some work done and then just walked away. The police came to me because it was still in my name with the state. They told me if he had a wreck and walked away ... I was responsible .... and I already cancelled my insurance. There may be other solutions to this problem, but now I meet them at the tag agency and transfer the title.
It might vary state by state, but this DID happen to me. Sold a truck, then a few weeks later I received a call from the police that I need to pay the fines and get my wrecked truck out of an impound lot. Turns out the guy I sold the truck to owned a small business, hadn't transferred the title, and a few days after buying it one of his employees fell asleep at the wheel and had a head-on with another car. I told the police I had a bill of sale, I forget if I had to send them a copy or just give them the info from it, but that's the last I heard of it. I've always kept my BOSs simple and to the point - vin, names, addresses, drivers license numbers, date and signatures. I've had to use the BOS to prove to the police I didn't own it any longer a few times. Other than the wrecked truck they have been minor - tag renewals, one where the police were getting multiple reckless driving complaints...
