Default fuel pump/ line question

71 C3 with small block

What is the second line coming from the gas tank to the fuel pump and its purpose?

Can it be blocked off and a standard fuel pump be used in place of the stock one?

It's a fuel return line, I would recommend you get a correct fuel pump, with a return. The return will help prevent vapor lock.

You can block off the return, and go with a pump without a return, but if you start having issues with poor performance, and hard warm starts, you know what the cause was.

I assume the larger line is supply to pump and smaller is return to the tank?

Correct. The larger 3/8" line is supply and the smaller 1/4" is return to the tank.

The standard and correct pump has the lines hooked up as you see it. It's the non-standard Bubba's favourite 'racin' pumps that have no return line.

is the "standard" fuel pump with the return line good enough for a 500 hp engine?

Why does it return anyway? Does the pump have an internal regulator or something?

Most people in that hp range have switched pumps but the factory also used oem pumps on some high hp engines.
The return prevents vapor lock and the oem pump has a crude form of regulator in it as do all oem pumps, not all have the return port.

Call or email this guy, he knows fuel pumps including the gph of the original pumps and will give you some real answers plus steer you in the right direction.
Also priced right when compared to most other high hp pumps.

I've seen guys running up to 600HP using a stock 3 port pump. The return line allows a small amount of fuel to recirculate back to the tank ensuring that there is constant flow of cool(er) fuel entering the pump to avoid vapour lock. There is no regulator of any sort in a stock pump, nor does it need one.
