I was just reading the guys post about the fake trim tag and one of the posters mentioned that trim tags were applied after the cars were painted. My question is that also true for 77's? When I stripped my paint from my 77 the trim tag was painted with several colors and I went back to the original orange and I did paint over my trim tag. Was I wrong and need to remove the paint to try to keep it original?
Your 1977 would have paint on it. Earlier C3s (1968-75-6?) had the trim tag attached AFTER paint. (GM moved the trim tag installation point during the mid-70s as they were ramping up production - trying to make the line more efficient.)
1977-1981 St Louis Corvettes had the trim tag installed between the second and third color coats, and so those trim tags WILL have paint on them.
1981-82 Bowling Green built Corvettes had the trim tag installed after the body left the paint area, so those cars WILL NOT have paint on the trim tag.
...Later C3s (IIRC 'mid '75 and up) had the trim tag attached prior to the body being painted. Yours sounds correct...

I knew I had it in my notes somewhere. Tom Russo wrote the following:
"The trim tag station was moved some time during 1975-76 model year to accommodate the need for space to match the increase in production during the mid to late 70's. The station was moved between paint booth 1 and booth 2. As a result, body build tags for Corvettes built prior to 1975 were not painted while trim tags after 1975-76 was painted after the primer coat and first paint coat."
My response in the other thread referred to the 69 in question. Didn't mean to rattle your cage.
