Default oil pump drive rod

Does anyone know how to keep the drive rod on the oil pump when you install it? I thought that it would be a friction fit,but the steel sleeve fits loose over the pump drive shaft. melling high vol pump and hardened drive rod. No plastic sleeve it is steel. Thanks

Not if you're using the Melling or Moroso HD replacement drive shaft. They use a steel collar instead of the plastic, and the collar is held in place with a roll pin.

OP, are you installing the pump and drive shaft on an engine that's out of the car, and on a stand, or are you installing the pump and shaft in the engine from underneath the car?

If from underneath, a little dab of white grease could help hold it in place while you raise it in position. However, after inserting the shaft on to the pump stub, hold the pump with one hand, and guide the shaft up into the block with the other hand, and use your fingers to turn the shaft until it engages the botton tang of the distributor.

Hold the pump in place with one hand, and install the bolt with the other....
