Unusual story. I bought a 69 coupe in September and have done a bunch of work restoring it (all new suspension components, replaced many interior parts, rechromed bumpers, new tires) and it's at the point where it is a great car to drive. I've lived here for five years and have a neighbor that is rarely here as he has business and a home in Florida. We've literally talked maybe three times. It has been extremely warm and his AC unit is locked up making a loud noise, so I called him in Florida and he asked that I go in his house to check on things. Went thru the garage and saw a car covered up. Couldn't resist and looked under the cover...a 71 black on black small block in pristine condition.
I've never seen it out of his garage. Need to get to know him better to see if he'd consider selling it.

has he seen your 69???
my guess is that if he saw your car, and never mentioned his 71, he is detached from it. Ask him 'what's under the sheet" and see where it goes!!!
Who says he wants to sell it? Maybe your enthusiasm and the fact you also have one, will make him interested in it again. Then you'll have a cruising buddy.
guy around the corner from me had a 67 convertible, all original 327/350, Marlboro Maroon, 53k miles. Stunning. Only rumors. Never saw it out once. Then a neighbor asked him about it and he sold it for 36k....6 yrs ago!!!!! The neighbor drove it for 3 months and sold it for 64k......paid for his kid's tuition with the profit!
I wouldn't tell him that you peeked but mention that the shape of what ever it is reminded you of your baby that you've been working on. See where the conversation goes. Even if he doesn't want to sell it he may want to to baby sit it for him..you know drive it , they should be exercised. Good luck.
Why would you sell the '69 instead of the '71? Sounds like you have it done the way you want it.
It's a bit of a toss-up. I had targeted getting a 69-71 and went for the 69. I really wanted a black over black and my 69 is fathom green over black. The 71 is black over black

Yeah, I understand that reasoning, I did the same thing.
And yes, many black '69s used to be Fathom green. So it doesnt matter that the '71 isnt the original color? Are they in comparable condition?

No idea if they are in comparable condition. He's not home much (I've seen him a couple times over the last 5 years) and didn't know he had the car in garage

He trusts you to go in and out of his house when he's not around.
If you tell him you "peeked" under the cover he may feel you violated his trust (wondering where else you "peeked"???)
