can be 6,7, or 8 depending upon what the original rear gears were

thanks. it is now in a restored '68 Camero, no way of knowing original rear ratio. I assume that we can try a couple plastic gears, 18-19 teeth until we are satisfied.

if I could see it, sure! the gear is on the tailshaft, right? I'm not following, Mel. I have not been inside one since the early '70's, but I had to change one once.

Take out the driven gear and its retainer. Look inside to see the drive gear on the mainshaft. Count the teeth. Quite simple.

ain't easy to eyeball up there. you need a flashlight and a mirror and must form your hands and arms into a pretzel. easier to buy 4 or 5 of the driven gears, they are cheap, and trial and error until you get close. drop the tooth count if your speedo reads slow, increase the tooth count if your speedo reads fast.

gracias, 69Chevy and joe. I had not thought of that! ol' age, I reckon.

the trans was probably with a 3.73. came to us with a 3.90, now has a 2.73. I have the formula for calculating it, but needed the drive teeth number.

I had a 4.11 and speedo was way off when I put a 2.73 in.. calculations showed I needed a 16 tooth driven gear.. they don't make them, so I had to buy a reduction/addition gear attachment. I ordered a attachment that would work with a 20 tooth driven gear so I could adjust by 1 or more teeth if I needed further adjustment.

call these guys, they can build you the exact ratio you need....

Hi,

If you know how many teeth on the plastic driven gear....then count how many tailshaft turns it takes to turn the driven gear say exactly five times.

The number of teeth on the tailshaft gear is then 5 x number of teeth on plastic gear divided by number of tailshaft turns.
