6 speed trans
i am curious how the trans shifter will match up to the stock hole in the floor pan
how does the hydraulic clutch reservoi and linkage mount up is it in the way or cause anything to be removed to make it fit
has anyone mounted a 6 speed to a stock engine? i am pretty sure i want an lt1 6 speed camaro set up. just wondering what you guys think. is it worth the trouble does it make the car so much different that i will want ot drive it more often (la traffic) does it make the fuel mileage reasonable 15-20 mpg is that possible?
i figure this will cost me at least $3-5k am i dreaming or is that do able

Sorry, no links,
You can get the shifter to end up in the stock console spot with an adapter,, you have to modify the tunnel hole but not too bad,
I mounted the hydraulic clutch res on the firewall with a fabbed bracket and rod, easy.
Made an adapter to use the stock crossmember, easy.
new driveshaft with proper yokes.
I'm at about 1800 rpm at 80mph with a 4.10 gear,
I NEVER worry about my mpg, but I'd say it would be decent if I could keep my foot out of it.
There are numerous threads on the so try a search for more help,
Frank

The "pocket" will have to be cut out, to get the six speed high enough in the tunnel.

Hydraulics:
The beauty of hydralics is you can run them in any way that works on your car. There is a cover on the firewall (designed for clutch linkage on manual cars) that can be removed for mounting the master. You'll have to find a spot for the reservoir, wherever you have room! I mounted mine behind the booster, but I have hydroboost and it takes up less room.

You can get special fitting to adapt an AN line to the stock slave cylinder. I was using the stock setup from a Camaro, but still had to get new lines because the stock one wasn't long enough.
Crossmember mod: If you can't weld, Custom Image Corvettes has the only bolt in I know of.

i have decided after looking at craigslist to go with a ls2 an 6 speed packaged together. By buying either a camaro or firebird. I can get one of those cars right now on cl for around $3k-4500. Then just take the engin, trans, and harnesses out of the car put it in my 79. To make it less expensivei would just sell the car shell with title when i am done with.
I have acces to several different welders at work an could easily do the mod in the picture above. Is the notch cut into the cross memeber, in you picture all that you had to do to it learningcurve?

Every car is going to be a little different, so I suggest mocking it up before cutting. Remove the rubber trans mount from the back of the trans, and intall the crossmember to see where the trans rests on it. To get it this high you will need to already have the whole for the shifter, or remove it before hand.
6spd Richmond works very well with my 3.08 rear gear.If you do the LS2 6 spd swap you may want to change your rear gear to match that trans(added costs).A 3.08 rear gear may not work well with that double OD.Good luck with your build....
