Default What is Summit trying to pull?

Hi, everybody! I was poking around on the Summit Racing website, and came across this top-end kit.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SME-K-355-400/

I said "Hey, that looks like a good deal!". However, my daddy always taught me that anybody who is trying to sell something cannot be trusted. So, I added up the cost if you bought each component separately, to see how much of a deal they were giving me. Turns out that if you bought each piece separately, it would end up costing $1,261.26. But, if you buy it as a "combo", it costs $1,287.21. $25.95 extra.

Apparently, you can get some pretty good deals at Summit, but they will try to pull the wool over your eyes if they think they can get away with it. I am sure they are not the only ones who pull this kinda crap. Remember, anyone who is trying to sell you something cannot be trusted!

BTW, I have some......uhhh......."ocean front" property down in south Florida.........WAY south Florida.........south-west Florida, actually..........anybody interested in buying some? I'll make you a deal...............

Then you prolly shouldn't buy it . . .

Really-- there must be some difference between the individual items and the package . . they're usually a pretty straight up group.

I would call them and ask them. I really like doing business with those folks very straight up.

Another +1 for Summit. Id be willing to bet you missed some gaskets or fasteners or something. Summit is usually very squared away. Not like those clowns at Jeggs....those bastages shipped me the wrong set of gears, then made ME pay return shipping on them.

Give them a call, accidents happen. Especially when you have an inventory like they do.

Remember, the package comes with 16 lifters, not just one.

But you're right, it still is $2.59 less to buy them all separately than to buy the package. Maybe is worth $2.59 to not have to individually add them all to your cart?

They have always been good to me, too, ungrateful jerk that I am. That is what really surprised me about it. Anybody else, i wouldn't even have bothered to post it, but Summit has a really good rep in our hobby. For all I know, it could just be a mistake. I really shouldn't single Summit out, it was just the particular example that set me off. My main point is that you shouldn't take anything at face value.

On a brighter note, I noticed that Summit reduced the price of their 162109 heads to slightly less than 900 bucks. They are now cheaper than the E-streets or the Dart SHP heads. Could this be the beginning of a price war?

Summit Racing has always treated me fairly. I'd have to think that there was an honest mistake made somewhere during the pricing of that kit. I don't think that they are trying to "pull" anything. I would take the time to call them and ask them about the error. I'd be interested in the answer. Please post back with their response.

OK, I'm a knucklehead, and I missed a piece of the combo. It turns out that the combo is really only $2.59 more than the individual pieces added up. But still, I would bet that a lot of folks don't bother to do the math, and just assume that they are paying less because it's a combo deal. I talked to a helpline guy named Coulton, who said that that was how they priced the combo kits, and that I was welcome to order the pieces individually in order to save the $2.59. I guess they figure it's a convenience for the customer, like they are doing you a favor by making the combo available so you don't have to make so many decisions.

So, to sum up: I'm a cheap knucklehead, and the Summit combos don't save you any money, they are only there to make your shopping experience easier.

When am I going to learn to keep my big mouth shut?

When I was in high school, I worked part time at a national grocery store as a stocker. The canned peas were normally (back then) 20 cents per can and they would sit on the shelf over a normal period of time (restock about every 3 days)....BUT when we put them on "sale" 5 cans for $1, I had a hard time keeping up with the demand! In fact, in addition to the shelf location, a lot of times I would just cut the box & stack them on the floor. I learned then.....ALWAYS read & think about any "sale" item or combo....

Anyone ever think that they possibly are charging extra because it is a kit. It is already pieced together and is complete. You looked up all the parts...well because all the parts are listed...now think to yourself if you wanted to PUT TOGETHER a top end kit...would you personally pick and look for everyone of those pieces...chances are you wouldn't...most people wouldn't because most people don't know everything they need...until they take it apart go to put it back together and realize...they need it. I am going to assume that they are charging for the expertise of knowing what you need.....

I really am just playing devils advocate here...and trying to help see another perspective....most of the time if something says it's a KIT it is usually cheaper....but hey....

i have seen items similar to that at 20 cents each and then be advertised as a sale of 4/$1

If they were selling peas for 20 cents a can when you were in high school, you must really be old.

That actually makes sense when you think about it.
Everytime I shop and I get rebates or special, all I'm thinking is "ok, that mean that without the rebates you're actually screwing me big time".
(extreme example : the shoe/fashion shops that cut the price in half at the end of the season).
If Summit just squeezes its margins to the minimum in the first place, which what I think they're doing, there is not more room for any kind of rebate, unless it's a manufacturer rebate.

Default Is what you see what you get?

Scotty,

I had a look at the photos and noticed a few things. One is the inlet manifold. In the general picture of the complete kit, it appears to be a square bore with NO crossover ports, but when you blow up the individual manifold photo, it's a different manifold WITH a crossover.

Second, when you blow up the camshaft, it looks like a roller. I'm guessing that they just grabbed some stock photos to illustrate their kit, but it annoys the pedant in me.

If one ordered such a kit, do you think they would supply a spreadbore manifold if you requested it? Or would you have to order every part individually? I guess I'll have to e-mail them and see if I get an answer.

The price is great compared with what you would pay at one of the dealers Down Under, but the freight would soon bump it up.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Regards from Down Under.

I also do most of my buying with Summit, for me they are a local business that I like to support. I do have one complaint with them and that is they advertise free shipping on some of their on-line items but turn around and charge you a arm and a leg for handling. just a little deceptive. Tim81
