The vin is in several different locations.
1- on drivers side windshield post
2- if car still has original frame vin is stamped on two locations on frame
3- if the original engine is still in the car and hasn't been decked you will find the partial vin stamped on the engine pad
4- on transmission if original to car

Yah. Windshield post is the only full VIN; might also be typed on a door sticker for applicable model years.
Frame, engine, and tranny stamps are VIN derivitives. One of the frame stamps cannot be seen with the body on the frame.
That one cannot be seen with the body on the frame. Same man with the same machine then moved back to just in front of the #4 body mount and stamped the frame a second time. Every now and then, if you've been living right and the Corvette deities are smiling on you, you can see the stamp by the #4 mount.
