I cannot figure out what this sensor is on my 79 with create 350. The wires have come off, but everything seems to be working. It is on the passenger side just above the starter.
The temp gauge is working and there is another sending unit on the driver's side of the engine. It has a single prong and looks more like what is see for replacement temp units.
That looks exactly like the sensor for electric fan on my 81. Exact same place also. triggered "on" at 210* off at 195*. At least that is where mine is regulated. Al

Yep.
Was your 79 originally an L82 with air conditioning?
That must be it - temp sensor for the electric fan that was disabled when the new engine was dropped in. Car runs cool so I am not going to worry about it.
Thanks Paul, the diagram is a big help. I'll have the fan checked out to see if it still works and maybe plug the sensor back in.
That is from the 1979 Corvette GM Factory Service Manual. I sold my 1979 in 2003 but I at one point contemplated adding one. But it does not kick in until 238*F and my L-82 never came close to that temp so I did not go to the expense. I suppose a sensor with a lower temp kick-in could be found.
Yea, I recently put in headers (short ceramic coated) and even on the highway at 4k RPM I haven't seen my temp go over 225. I don't believe I need the electric fan, but it is a option that I will keep in mind.
