Default Does your Nut go higher? pic

In looking at the big nut that goes on the PS steering box/pitman arm, I noticed that mine looks to be only a couple of threads on the shaft. When I try to turn it tighter it makes an awful eek noise. I know its supposed to be like 150 ft.lbs torqued.
In the pics you can see how far down the nut is on the shaft and you can see the gap above the nut to the base of the steering box.
Can someone take a look at their nut and see how theirs compares to mine. ?

That nut is possibly quite a bit overtight... the lockwasher is squeezed enough to spread the ends noticeably. If your torque spec (wet or dry by the way???) is 150 lb/ft I suspect the designers stipulated a hardened flat washer for the nut to bear against, not a spring lockwasher. I would double check if the washer is correct, and disassemble that joint, clean (and lube if required) the threads on everything and reassemble using a torque wrench, not a guess.

I believe they are designed that way so you can get a pitman arm puller on it when you need to remove it. Every one I have seen is that way.
