hello, people..this is my first time at this forum..i need your help. I just dropped a new turn key engine into my 1980 corvette. However, I am worried about passing smog test. does anyone know if it will pass with an after market air cleaner or do I need to connect the stock one? Also, what do I need to make sure I pass emissions? Please advise..first time I owe a corvette..i dont know much about cars but I have always dreamed with owening a c3 vette...i can't wait untill I actually take it on the road. I'ts been in my garage for three yrs and I finally saved money for this engine and now emissions..please help.
Welcome to CF! Great place for all things Corvette. There are some great people here and so much knowledge of these cars it's really amazing.
We'll need more information to help you out. What state are you in? What engine did you put in? What are the engine specs - meaning, what cam, compression, intake and carb etc? Still have the catalytic converter(s) on it?
There are a bunch of factors to passing an emissions test, and some states are more strict than others. Give us more details and I wouldn't be surprised if someone from your state can help you out.
Good luck with your new toy! Exciting to have it running for sure
I am in california, I put in a 350 small block engine, that I ordered from pheonix engines. they asked if it was going to be emissions friendly and I told them that it was. so they said they would put a legal cam. it has an edlebrock 1400 model carb. emissions legal. my worries are about all that vacuum.
Youll need all the original smog equiptment intact.
What part of Ca some counties vary on strictness.
Details and some pics of the engine compartment will help. In theory, everything should be as it left the factory. I'm more familiar with the smog equipment on an 81, but I'm sure that there are lots of vacuum lines that will need to be in place for your 80 to pass the visual part of the smog test. The evap system will also need to be present and functional. With a fresh engine and cat, you should be in reasonable shape for the sniffer part of the test as long as you make sure that the timing is set to the bottom end of the timing range on your emissions sticker (on the firewall over the brake booster).
Since you are talking about an 80 I think you will find that CA does not like anything aftermarket on the engine. Especially the air cleaner.
I think you're in for a real nightmare. CA has the tightest regs on replacement engines in the country. One of my friends had an engine throw a rod and bought a new GM crate engine. Nothing wild, just a nice 350. CA put him thru H..LL about the "missing smog equipment" for the year of his car, EVEN tho the tests were all within range! Took him over a year to get it all resolved.
My advice is sell the car and live according to the smog czars, or move and live with more reasonable folks.
ok, so I will try to put all the original equipment on there before I take it to get it smogged. However, I will need all the vacuum diagrams so I can do it correctly. Can someone please help and post all the diagrams I need? I'm sure theres a lot..thanks
Poke around Willcox's website and there may be something. Holley also has a diagram for replacing a Quadrajet with a Holley that shows the hoses off the carb: http://www.holley.com/data/Products/...199R9503-2.pdf (see bottom of page 2)
You can also get remn smog pumps at the local auto parts. Even universla type smog rails willl pass. Paying big bux for "oringal # matching stuff" is a waste here long as its in the correct spot. Never hurts though!
