Default New Headlight issue 1980

I think my car is trying to show me how many issues it can have at one time. My newest one is the headlights.

I just noticed when I pull the **** out to raise my headlights, the lights come up but they don't turn on. If I turn on my brights though, all 4 lights will turn on.

Any thoughts?

Mike-

If you go to the wires I showed you in another thread.. with the low beams on see if you have power at the low beam wires. I don’t have the schematic with me right now but what you need to do is trace back from the that point to the firewall. If you look at the connector on the low beam you’ll see a power and ground wire. Test continuity from that connector to the fire wall if you don’t have power there.

You could have an issue in the steering column in the form of a dimmer switch issue. But the best way to tell is to trace back lack of power. Basically the power for the headlamps comes from the headlamp switch to the dimmer on the yellow wire. Depending on if you are on high beam or low beam the switch sends the power to either side.

The schematic below is for an 81 but it should be the same.

So.. pull the plug on the low beam with the switch in Low.. See if you have power on the tan wire. If you don't have power then go inside the car and see if you have it on the brown wire on the column... Hope this helps...

according to the shop manual, the low beams are dual filament and have a hi beam filament. they come on with the other hi beams when in the dimmer switch is put into the high beam mode. the dimmer switch may have a bad low beam contact. it is located "on the lower side of the steering column.

I attempted to take apart the steering column this weekend to get to the turn signal lever. I ended up chickening out when I got to the spring because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get all that back together. Is this the area "on the lower side of the steering column" that I need to be looking? Or is it all that wiring under the dash?

One good thing is I fixed the horn. I was under the assumption I didn't have one.
