The oil pump is in the oil pan under the distributor. You are probably looking at the fuel pump. It is entirely possible to have an oil leak there. Does it appear to be leaking between the engine and the pump?

Yes I don't have a hoist but it seems to be leaking in that area beside that black canister which is the fuel pump I'm assuming. What's there that it could be leaking from ???

The gasket for the pump, the pump itself or the plug on the front of the block

Yes. The fuel pump has a rod that is "driven" by the camshaft. It comes down and moves the "handle" on the fuel pump. There are two gaskets and a plate that goes inbetween the fuel pump and the block. Pretty common place for an oil leak.

I recommend you get three books. I bought them as soon as I bought my car 11 years ago.
How to Rebuild a Chevy Small Block.
Chiltons or Haynes book on your model corvette.
Your car's year AIM (Assembly Manual)

Access to the pump is a little tight but you can get to it. I'd check to make sure the bolts are tight first. The top two bolts and bottom two bolts are two different sizes. I think a 3/8 and 7/16. Can't remember though.

I had to replace my fueld pump after it failed. I do not remember all the details but it was difficult to hold the spoon in place while bolting on the fueld pump. I solved my problem by inserting a screwdriver into an adjacent hole that held the spoon in place. I am sure that other guys on this forum are aware of this technique and can better explain. Not too bad of a job. Good luck on finding the problem!

I have dealt with this 2 ways.
1. use a heavy wheel bearing grease on the shaft to hold it up in the hole so you can get the pump on.
2. The adjacent hole your referring to is a threaded passage to the shaft hole, put a bolt in there FINGER TIGHT ONLY to hold the shaft in place.
