Kinda of looks like mine - maybe I can put a 427 in it, change the hood and knock off the luggage rack and sell it for the bargain price of 100k. The other funny thing is that the reporter has the same name as me - no relation.
Believe it or not, if the car is a real L88 which I believe it is, then yes it is worth 400k even with a restoration motor. I highly doubt that he will find the original motor though. My guess is that the pad surface has been decked when it was rebuilt.
I'm certain there are those on the forum that will have a different perspective, but an L88 . . just like an LT1 is all about the engine.
Absent that specific power plant- it's just another Corvette and has only a public interest sort of value for the purchaser and bragging rights for what it "used to be".

I agree. An L-88 without the L-88 is not an L-88.

Worth it to who? I'm sure the owner considers it to be worth $400K. Let's face it, you can find a fool with money almost anywhere.
The challenge for the current owner is to establish that the car is an original L-88. The story from the guy claiming to be the original owner (at age 18) is nice, but he needs documentation. If he can prove it was an original L-88 and the car retains the features of an original L-88, he can build a "restoration engine" and the finished car will be worth some big bucks. There are many high dollar L-88s that are not wearing their original engine.
get you the closest correctly date coded parts, hire the best broacher and stamper, get an affidavit from someone that will swear its authenticity, restore it to the max.. the L88 magically appears... maybe not 400K, but perhaps 200K...
there is virtually no difference in parts to the well done clones that go for 150K and the real documented 400K cars.. the only difference is pedigree.. people will pay big bucks for that tank sticker.
