Default Engine identification

hi guys,

trying to find out if my engine has been changed in the 37 years the Vette has been here. Can you identify the engine type from the numbers on it? Looks like I have a massive radiator on it. The same as on the 454 I think.... This thing is turning into FrankenVette
Numbers stamped on the block are: V0724 CHB and another 155437182
Does that make sense?

The CHB in a 1975 means L48 with automatic. The 0724 is July 24th. Does the last number match your VIN?

One way to tell is the serial# of your car will be stamped into the engine block and match the Vin number on the drivers side pillar post (viewed from the outside looking through the windshield at the post) . Usually the last 6 digits. In your case using the # on the block that you stated 155437182 that would indicate that the serial # of your car is 37,182. That same # 37,182 should be the last digits on you Vin #. If it doesn't match, the the engine is not original to the car.
I am sure someone else will chime in on the code V0724 CHB.
John

Yup, that second number is the same as the VIN. its 5S instead of 55
So it looks like its the original engine thats in it. I'll do some more research on the radiator that should be in it.

Thanks amigo

Y B
Is your car equipped with air conditioning? It will have a larger radiator if equipped with air.
If you post a picture of the radiator it would help to identify.

That makes sense John,

The air con has been chopped but is still in situ. Heres the radiator.

The bottom is sitting on the sway bar.

need to address this before it wears it away. Looks like a remove and remount... I am also thinking of fitting electric fans and doing away with the fan thats there. If I go down the route of electric fans will I still need a shroud?

Looks like the radiator might be correct, but I am not an expert on on 75's. There isen't a lot of room for the bottom hose and the sway bar they are all tight there. Maybe the rubber that the radiator sits on at the bottom is wore out or missing and allowing the radiator set lower than it should be thus causing the two to hit like yours.
You are diffidently missing the radiator shroud. which needs to be there for proper cooling. and it only make things a wee bit tighter in that area. I also think there should be a fan clutch too, your fan is solidly mounted (No Clutch)
Maybe a forum member will post a picture of their 75,s engine compartment so you get a better idea.
Regards John
