Don't have my '78 AIM handy at the moment, and haven't had cause to study up on this particular item, but might there be a retainer clip behind the ****?
Bear with me this could be wrong (been a loooooog time)
Open the door and trip the latch (as if it was closed)
put the key in and lock the cylinder (don't turn it the other way and open it)
There should be a small little opening on the side of the latch right down by the inside of the door, opposite side from what you have pictured above, bend a paperclip or use a small flat screwdriver or allen key and if you press in there it should release the lock cylinder out the front
Looking at your picture again the slot might be right under the fork that hands out rather than on the side where the older ones were

On the front side, pop the chrome guide off (it's just a press fit) and then there'll be a retaining ring behind it. You can loosen the retaining ring and pull the cylinder out that way as well.
So I popped the chrome guide off and I see this nasty thing that looks like it was once a screw but no retaining ring. Can't beleave that someone did that much damage to screw putting it in.
Wanted to see if anybody had been down this path. Do I drill out this screw and will that get this lock out?
My '79s once just fell out. There was a "nut" that went around the entire cylinder from the inside of the glove box if i remember right. What year exactly is yours?
