I just got this E-mail from another forum that I visit, thought I would pass it along.
"Recently "Machinist Workshop Magazine" did a test on penetrating oils using nuts and bolts that they `scientifically rusted' to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water. They then tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them. This is what they came up with:

I've used Kano Kroil for years. I'm not suprised by the rankings. It's kinda hard to find around here. I use WD 40 on items I want to protect from rusting or whenever I need to spray a larger area and don't want to 'waste' the Kroil.
Im a believer in kano kroil. Not saying the home brew will not work, but a spray can of kroil is convenient. Plus I've never had a fire using it around heated parts. Acetone, I'd be a bit hesitant.
