Default Please help identify this hole on my engine

on the engine in the '77, there is a hole right in the center of the block between the carb and the distributor.

I bought the car (not running) with this hole open unfilled/uncovered, and suspect that it shouldn't be that way. I looked on my silverado and there appears to just be a plug in the hole as installed in the truck.

My question is, on the '77 vette, should the hole be plugged, or is there something else that should be installed in there.

I have only seen one reference to it in the manuals I have and they just refer to is as "fitting"....very helpful.

Thanks

I think you mean your manifold not the block. If the hole your talking about has treads in it your talking about the main vacuum pick up point for items like for your Trans (if an automatic) vacuum for power brakes a lot of times is there as well as the pick up point for the headlights doors.

Sorry, yes, in the top of my manifold.

Ok thanks.

EDIT: Just went to check, found the male end on a line still attached to the transmission. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

If i want to run the engine outside of the car, I assume i can just stick a bolt in there for now to plug it and make the engine run properly. Seems like it would allow a little too much air in otherwise.

Sounds like were there vacuum fitting goes. Depending on the options on your car, the fitting required will have 1, 2 or 3 ports; to provide vacuum to the headlights, power brakes, etc.

That hole would be a tapered pipe thread. A standard bolt will not screw in there without destroying the hole. You need to figure out the size, most likely 3/8 or 1/2 in pipe, and get a plug.
