I just took my red '72 convertible to the shop to have the hood repaired because the heat from the air cleaner is cracking the paint on my base model hood. The previous owner restored the car with a 1970 four bolt main small block and 1968 heads, Edelbrock manifold and Holley carb. I'm thinking of changing the hood to a LT-1 hood to get more clearance and I like the look since it is no longer a numbers matching car. Was the pin striping on the red LT-1s always white from the factory? I've seen pictures of numbers matching cars with both white stripes and sometimes black stripes. My convertible top is white so I think it would look good with the white stripes and decal. I'm not trying to trick anyone that it's an LT-1 but I like the look and need the clearance.
When I had mine painted I had the original red color wit hblack pinstripes and a white top. It looked great. I always thought the white strip kind of got lost on a red car. I have many pictures of the hood if you would like to see them. I now have an L88 hood with black on it also. I am going to switch to a black canvas top also.

I'd really like to see some of those pictures. While the white stripes would match my roof I'm not sure I care for the white stripes on red as much.
I have a modified 327 in my 68 with Edelbrock heads, Holly 750 carb, Comp Cams, etc and do not have any paint issues on my hood - certainly nothing heat related. I too want to go to an LT-1 hood for space as it is a little tight in there.

Wow, very nice! The paint on mine is about 15 years old and just started cracking recently.
