Default Type of sandblaster.....

For you guys that have sandblasted your frames, do you have a suggestion of brand name and model? Not looking to break the bank, but want a good one. Also, what type of media do you use for the frame and do you use the same for parts? I have a 6.5 HP 30 gallon compressor.
Thanks.

For doing a lot of items like frames and brackets I would reccomend trying to find a Sandblasting facility in your area. a small home compressor will not keep up to the demands sandblasting requires not to mention the mess you will have to clean up.

I did my frame, wheels, brackets etc all for about $300. using a U-blast facility with a 200hp compressor and monster sand hopper.

Honestly, have you looked into farming that project out? I had my frame and 30 pieces sandblasted and powder coated for $600. Very hard to compete with that. Sandblasting makes a royal mess. On another project car I rented an industrial blaster and compressor, it took several hundred lbs of sand. Was a very dirty job and I have no inclination to do that again. I have a central pneumatic sand blaster for doing small stuff, your 30 gal compressor will be taxed. I know, I gave mine to my son. Its not big enough. I stepped up to a 60 gal with a 220 motor. It handles blasting well. I use glass bead in my blaster, its pricey but I try and contain as much as I can and re-use it. Don't use silica sand. Bad for your health. Anyway, think about having someone else do the big job. I'd never do mine in a home garage again.

i agree.i had mine blasted for 150 dollars at a truck rebuilder and gave the guy a case of beer too.its way too much money to invest in equipment that you will probably never use again.

I used a 110lb pressurized sand blaster from HF... I've only got a 5hp, 33 gallon upright compressor and could only go 5-10 minutes before I felt like I had to give the compressor a break... I also have a small cabinet blaster for the smaller parts... I've probably gone through 15-20 100 lbs bags of sand during my project...

Looking back, it would've been easier to borrow a trailer and farm it out... Sand blasting the frame was VERY messy... I put plastic up in my garage, but had to "shovel up" all the spent sand after I was done...

Think I paid $129 for the blaster and sold it for $75 when I was done, but there was A LOT of labor involved...

found a local guy that does sandblasting, he charges $75.00/ hr...
it took 3 hrs to sandblast my frame, front spindles, bumper supports, half shafts, driveshaft, and a crap load of assorted small brackets, bolts etc...

cost me $225.00 for everything!

Good advice there.

I have a 6 HP, 60 gallon upright tank, two stage compressor, and even trying to do several "odds and ends" pieces with my siphon sandblaster, can give the compressor a workout, plus it doesn't effectively get the job done. I also have one of those "Harbor Freight Specials", a 10 gallon pressurized blaster, and that doesn't do an adequate job for automotive use....

Hey Billy,

I'm actually in the blasting and painting business and I can tell you that you will be much better off by just taking the parts to a local shop. Trying to blast your frame with a 6.5HP compressor is going to take more time and effort on your part than what you can get it done for.....that said, if you have plenty of time go for it, it's not hard/complicated. FYI, we charge $175.00/hour to blast (more than the other guys shop) but a frame and parts shouldn't take longer than an 1 1/2 hours if the shop is set up with high pressure/volume equipment. $200.00 - 300.00 is a fair price.

Good luck,
Gary
