The pans were just standard ole sheet metal... I've never seen a trace of galvanization on them. I have installed both the imported and the US made pans. Both take about the same amount of patience and skills to install and neither is an easy job. Labor intense for sure.
Thanks for replys. My pans just had a little rust. In the prosess of removing factory coating it was tough stuff. Used aircraft paint stripper to get top layer off but under that was a black coating which was really tough. Took 2 coats og stripper and sanding with 80 grit to remove. Now Im going to put a layer of zinc phsphate and coat with POR15.
Just because I can buy a steel pan that will fit a 75L doesn't mean that's when they were changed. I can buy fiberglass headlight buckets for a '63, but that don't make them original.
I believe mine were also (78). They had a white crust type of stuff where there was rust. I was asking because I was wondering how well the POR15 would adhere to the metal. But I wire wheeld, and sanded to bare metal all the floor pan surfaces. Galvanizeing is just a coating on steel,Right?

galvanizing is simply a zinc coating. Zinc coating is a sacrificial metal used to protect steel. Zinc will corrode and leave the underlying metal intact - for awhile. Eventually zinc-coated parts will lose their coating and the metal underneath will rust - how long depends on how much moisture gets on it.
also, other fun uses of galvanized metal. Did you know that if you lay strips of galvanized steel on your roof (at the peak) it will kill moss? eventually it'll fail (10ish years in the PNW) when the zinc is finally, completely washed off.
