hi folks i would like to paint the plastic ring area of the horn button on my 76 as it is looking kinda shabby. am i right to assume that it merely pops off ? i won't have access to my car until april but i am adding things to my ever expanding to-do list. thanks doug.
The horn button lifts off the steering column. It will be a one piece unit once you get it off. Only the crossed flags section is plastic; the outer ring is metal and painted to match your interor color.
metal eh!!! man that will make removal of the raggedy old paint remnants easier. painting it and the seat backs will tidy things up nicely.thanks mike.

The horn button on a 76 was not metal, it was plastic, and molded in color.
All 76 Corvettes use the 4 spoke "Vega" steering wheel. Both the wheel and the horn button, were molded in color to match the interior. You can use regular interior dye, to refinish your horn button.
The 76 button still just pops off the wheel, and is actually pretty easy to take apart to paint. The button is made of a soft plastic. You can separated button's soft plastic cover from the plastic retainer, by just pulling it off of the retainer. Once you pull it apart, you can remove the emblem, and re-dye the button.
thought it was plastic.the old memory doesn't work like it used to.they say it's the second thing to go but damned if i can remember the first!! thanks guys.
Here are pictures of the 76 horn button, both assembled and disassembled.
The only problem I see in taking it apart to dye, is that it could be hard to get the emblem back in, without scratching the new dye. You're going to want to get the cover warm first, so that it's softer and easier to work with.
By the way, I can't remember what the first thing to go is either. Since I can't remember it though, I must not need it!
