the alternator is sitting too far to the rear and the alt.pulley looks wrong.i can definately see the belt running crooked.i would use a straight edge on the crank or water pump pulley to the alternator pulley and measure how far back the alt.is.maybe just the wrong bracketry on the alternator.mine is close to the power steering pump and there is actually a shield on the steer.pump to keep the belt from hitting during deflection.did you try putting the belt on the forward groove of the alternator pulley.

A couple of wrong pulleys- at least for the stock BB belts configuration.

The Regular Production Options (codes)
N40= Power Steering
C60= Air Conditioning

The 69 BB without A/C- there are 3 belts.

thanks for the reply....
Have any pictures..?
see the pic's
Before I put the power steering pump on

The alternator ran true and straight then I put the pump on and the ALT belt runs into the pump
.
the PO when the motor was in the 78 beat the corner of the valve cover in so the Alt would ride high enough so the belt wouldn't
hit the pump......I wasn't happy about that fix.
So I beat the valve cover dent out and thought it would clear...I was wrong

Here are some shots that I hope will help. The pulleys are made by March but the groove configuration is the same as factory.

Rpo n40 (top right) is what you want, minus the air pump.

Order the 69 assembly instruction manual (AIM) and follow the diagrams for the optional big block engine installation. The AIM lists the various pullies you will need for the big block. Some are the same as the small blocks, others are not. The AIM also lists the part numbers of the belts you will need and shows how they route.

...I beat the valve cover dent out...
If the "dent" was on the lower rear corner of the valve cover, it was supposed to be there to clear the power brake booster.

Do you have a big block radiator for cooling?

Do you have big block front springs for the additional weight?

My 68 bb has a double groove pulley on the p/s pump, same set up as the N-40 diagram. 1 belt from the water pump and crank pulley to the p/s pump and 1 belt from the p/s pump to the alternator.

If you are going with a stock setup, the alternator pulley is offset.

Here is a picture of the water pump and PS pulleys/belts

Your problem is that you don't have the right brackets or pulleys.

If you look at the pictures posted by both Les and Faster Rat, you can see what the brackets and pulleys should look like.

Big Block Corvettes with power steering, used a unique set of brackets, that were only used on power steering big blocks.

To start with, when a big block Corvette was ordered with power steering, the power steering pump used a two groove pulley, and the alternator was driven off of the power steering pump, not the water pump. The alternator and power steering pump, are not mounted independent of each other on big blocks, like your set up. They share a set of common brackets.

It looks like you're either using small block parts, passenger car parts, non power steering big block parts, or a combination of the three.

You may be able to make everything work, by experimenting with various brackets, but you might be better off buying the correct pieces. All of the brackets and pulleys are available, for a price. The alternator/power steering brackets will run you about $165, and the pulleys another $200.

thanks for the pictures that was awsome and helpfull
I do have the factor manual Have two
cause I ordered them twice(sometime I can't help myself)
I bought then in "90" when I first started building this car
....(long story)
it has a very heavy, pricey BB radiator
and it has the stock suspension it was a L71 with th F-41 spring set she's a stiffy Non pwer steering non power asst brakes I saved the gas tank (build sheet)

If you guys want i can bore you with lots of pictures

I figured those pulleys were not stock going in .

I pulled a 1966 chevelle 396 out of a 1978 corvette
and the dent was in the front corner of the valve cover the PO put it there so this alt would sit high enought for the belt to clear the power steering pump
I first thought he put that dent in the front corner because he was to cheep to buy a longer Alt belt but that was not the case
.
Again thanks for all the help
All have to scroung some pulley out of my pile
I will update when I find something I can live with
.
.
Here's a picture when i first dragged this beauty home (curca 1990)
it was a beaute tiger on the hood pontiac tail light frenched in
I put it togther on a tight budget
.

.

.
then i skinned it
and used to drive the yuong'n around the neighborhood like that
.

.
.
I've owned this car on and off for 23 years
.
(curca 2010)..........................s
